ABOUT MVHS MUSIC
Mission Viejo High School is located in Mission Viejo, California, and is part of the Saddleback Valley Unified School District (SVUSD). The MVHS Instrumental Music program has a long history of music excellence across its many ensembles. Under the direction of Daniel Thomson, along with many passionate world-class instructors and coaches who are outstanding in their field, students develop not only their musical abilities but their work ethic, teamwork and leadership skills.

Raising funds is critical towards the success of the program and the students, which is why it is highly encouraged for parents to participate by becoming a board member. The Instrumental Music program is supported by the MVHS Instrumental Music Boosters Association (MVHSIMBA), which provides funds and volunteer hours through the generous assistance of parents and volunteers. All parents of Instrumental Music students are automatically given membership into MVHSIMBA and are encouraged to actively participate through fundraising, volunteering, and donating to the program, as well as attending performances and events to support our students!
Marching Band
Parent support is vital to the success of our students, and this program cannot happen without parent support and volunteers like you! There is no better encouragement for the student than to know they are being supported by friends and family! Attend home football games when the Marching Band & Colorguard are performing their show at halftime, or come to competitions and wear Booster Red!
Drumline
A 2-time WGI World Champion and 12-time SCPA Gold Medalist Percussion Ensemble under the direction of Mr. Roger Carter, Mission Viejo Alumni and percussion caption head of the world-class Drum Corps, The Bluecoats, winter drumline is simply the battery (snare drums, bass drums, quads, and cymbals), as well as the front ensemble (marimba, vibes, xylophone, and auxiliary percussion), put in a gym, marching on the floor and running around playing drums, performing a show through engaging choreography and music.
Colorguard
Colorguard is more than a form of dance, but also a control of the body through the use of equipment and choreography to enhance the visual effects of a marching band show. During the winter and early spring, the Colorguard competes indoors and is often called Winter Guard. The colorguard is under the direction of Mr. Robby Jacobson, who also is a colorguard technician for the world-class Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps.
Concert Ensembles
Our concert ensembles include the Wind Ensemble, String Orchestra, and on certain occasions, a Symphony Orchestra! Students enroll in year-long classes that perform around four concerts a year in the MVHS Performing Arts Theater as well as at various festivals in the spring. Our concert ensembles have also performed in several world-renowned venues such as the Segerstrom Center, and Carnegie Hall in New York.
Jazz Ensemble
The Mission Viejo High School Jazz Band is comprised of musicians from all grade levels who audition to earn a place in this highly-talented band of about twenty players. Under the direction of MVHS Music Director Daniel Thomson, jazz band performances move beyond the traditional stage with a cabaret-style jazz night in November, and the annual 'Jazz Under the Stars' performance in May. At their performances, the Jazz Band performs a variety of genres including swing, Latin, and contemporary tunes.
