DRUMLINE
2-time WGI Word Champion, and 12-time SCPA Gold Medalist
Winter Drumline
Winter Drumline is made up of battery (snare drums, bass drums and quads/tenors) along with the cymbals. Add the front ensemble; xylophones, marimbas, vibes, synths and auxiliary instruments, and move them all indoors to perform a marching show, exclusively through percussive instruments! The Mission Viejo High School Winter Drumline competes at various venues in the Southern California Percussion Alliance (SCPA) circuit as well as the Winter Guard International (WGI) Percussion Championships.
Currently, the Mission Viejo drumline is under the direction of Roger Carter, not only a Mission Viejo High School Music Program Alumni, but also the Caption Head of the world class Drum Corps, the Bluecoats, as well as Broken City Indoor Percussion. The MVHS Drumline started out in the local competitions circuits in 1989 winning the SoCal Championships in 1993 and 1994. They are also 2-time WGI Scholastic World Champions! Most recently, the Mission Viejo Drumline made it into the 2024 SCPA Championship Finals!
During the fall season, the Drumline performs as part of the Marching Band & Color Guard with performances at school football games and at Western Band Association (WBA) field show tournaments throughout the state. Winter Drumline is also a 6th period class that counts as PE credit during the spring semester, with introductory rehearsals typically beginning in late November or early December following the end of the marching band season. Percussionists can also take part in the year-long Wind Ensemble and many participate in the Percussion Ensemble chamber group and/or Jazz Band. The Battery also plays cadences for school pep rallies, and local community events, including the Mission Viejo Walk Against Drugs and Relay for Life.
